Preventing Infections in Healthcare Facilities
A National Landscape Scan

Summary
On any given day, one in 31 hospitalized patients has a healthcare-associated infection (HAI). This issue is exacerbated by antimicrobial resistance - the direct result of misuse and overuse of antibiotics. Local health departments play an increasingly critical role in supporting healthcare facilities to prevent and control these infections.
To support local health department efforts, the National Association of County and City Health Officials needed to understand the specific challenges and opportunities they faced.
We implemented a national landscape scan, including:
Conducted an extensive review of literature and resources
Collected artifacts from local health departments
Performed key informant interviews with local health departments and national public health organizations
Completed qualitative analysis to identify patterns and gaps
Compiled findings into a final report with recommendations and presented these to a national audience
This work has informed NACCHO's targeted technical assistance for its members nationwide.
